My thoughts in recent days have been filled with ponderings about prayer: the importance of it, my need for it, what the scripture says about it, etc. Jesus prayed. He exhorts and even admonishes us to pray. He provided us with a ‘template’ of prayer (see Matt. 6:9-13 and 7:7-11) and with example of a ‘prayerful’ and a prayer-filled life.
PRAYER MATTERS! God invites it, He hears it and He answers it. Prayer is a weapon in our spiritual arsenal that allows us to prevail over sin & temptation and against all the forces of evil. Prayer brings the power, the person and the resources of El Shaddai – the all-gracious, all-merciful, all-sufficient, all-knowing, always present, perfectly just & righteous, patiently longsuffering, ever-loving, Almighty God – from heaven, to earth. Study the scriptures and see for yourself: prayer brings fire, brings rain, brings calm, brings peace and brings life. Prayer provides a vehicle that can transport us into the presence of God and at the same time enable us to stand shoulder to shoulder with a brother, a sister, a parent, a child, a friend or a stranger across the room, across the hall, across the street, across the country or half-way around the world.
There is certainly more I could say, but by now you get the point. More importantly, by now you hear my heart and you hear HIS heart. I conclude with something I read this morning by Gordon B. Watt: “There is no power on earth like that of prevailing prayer. Dare to be definite with God; dare to lay hold of His promises and to pray in faith until the answer comes.”
“Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking reverently and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, the door will be opened. Or what man is there of you, if his son asks him for a loaf of bread, will hand him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will hand him a serpent? If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father Who is in heaven – perfect as He is – give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him!” (Jesus; Matt. 7:7-11, amplified)
