Why are We Here?

In my devotions this morning, I came across some well-worn and often quoted words from D.L. Moody. These may be words I have shared with you in the past, but they are words that are always timely and that I can’t be reminded of too often. Therefore, I gladly share them with you. May his exhortation speak to your heart today as it did to mine. Read on ~ “God has placed us in the world to shine. We are not here to buy or sell or to get gain; We are not here to accumulate wealth, nor to acquire worldly positions. If we are Christians, this world is not our home. Our home is up yonder in heaven. God has placed us in this world to shine for Him – to light up the darkness around us. Remember, even a very small light will do a good deal when it is in a very dark place.”

As you might imagine, after reading these words my thoughts turned to the words of Jesus… taken from The Sermon On The Mount: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let YOUR light shine before others, so that they may see your good works… and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:14-16, ESV)
