My wife and I are in the midst of another season of change (some might call it a “transition”) that requires that we hear from the Lord and discern His leading. I began my morning devos in an attitude of prayer, asking the Lord to meet me, to show His hand at work in our situation. How blessed I was to find the following in the course of my normal reading. It is a wonderful reminder of a truth that most of us already know. Nevertheless, it was God’s way of revealing to me (once again) that He sees, He hears, He knows, He understands and He is at work, faithfully going before me to prepare the way. Read on. Perhaps the Lord will speak to you as He did to me.
The thought begins with the familiar words of Psalm 37:23 – “The steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord…”
(the author comments) “We have the fullest assurance that our God can and does guide His children in all things. He can signify His mind to us as to this or that particular act or movement. If not, where are we? How are we to get on? How are we to regulate our movements? Are we to be drifted hither and thither by the tide of our circumstances? Are we left to blind chance? Or to the mere impulse of our own will? We can thank God it is not so!
(he continues) “Our Lord Jesus Christ can, in His own perfect way, give us the certainty of His mind in any given case; and, without that certainty, we should never move. He can intimate His mind to His servant as to where He would have him (or her) go, and as to what He would have him (or her) to do; and no true servant will ever think of moving or acting without such intimation. We should never move in uncertainty. If not sure, let us be quiet and wait! Very often it happens that harass and we fret ourselves about movements that God would not have us make at all. A person once said to a friend, ‘I am quite at a loss to know which way to turn’ to which his friend wisely responded, saying, ‘Then don’t turn at all.’
(he concludes) “It is the meek He will guide in judgment and teach His way! We must never forget this.” (C.H. Mackintosh)
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
“Trust in the LORD, and do good… Delight thyself also in the LORD, and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; Trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass… Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:3-5, 7)
The steps of a good man are ordered of the Lord…and so are the stops! (George Mueller)
